Sponsor: Jeremy Chien, Ph.D. MED: Obstetrics & Gynecology Ovarian cancer ranks among the most lethal gynecologic malignancies. Chemotherapy has been a standard of care in treating ovarian cancer for the past two decades. Chemotherapy resistance, however, remains a major challenge in treating ovarian cancer, necessitating the search for new treatment strategies. This study evaluates the efficacy of three chemotherapeutic agents- Clofarabine (CLF), AZD5305 (Saruparib), and AZD6738 (Ceralasertib)-as single agents or in combination in chemotherapy-resistant ovarian cancer cells. Using three ovarian cancer cell lines treated with single agents or in combination, we assessed perturbed gene expression as drug responses to identify biological pathways contributing to potential synergistic effects. Bulk RNA sequencing data were analyzed through differential gene expression between groups (defined by treatments), and results were visualized by various techniques in R to identify molecular changes associated with treatment responses. Our findings indicate that cells treated with the combination of AZD6738 and CLF exhibited reduced resistance, suggesting a potential therapeutic advantage. These results provide insights into targeting chemotherapy-resistant ovarian cancer and support further investigation into combination strategies to overcome resistance. About Paper:
The Hmong community in the greater Sacramento area faces significant health disparities, necessitating culturally sensitive healthcare. Hmong Lifting Underserved Barriers (HLUB) Clinic aims to address these challenges by understanding their health needs. 36 charts from patients of Hmong descent, who were seen at the HLUB Clinic from 2014 to 2023, were reviewed for several parameters. Patients' BMI results were 13.33% normal, 50% overweight, and 33.33% obese. Out of 36, 24 had elevated or high systolic blood pressure in one or both arms during their first visit. Hepatitis screenings showed 4 with active chronic Hepatitis B, 9 naive, 8 immune from vaccination, 12 with past infection, 2 incomplete screenings, and 1 triple positive panel that requires secondary labs. The HgbA1c values suggest that 15 patients were within the normal range, 8 were pre-diabetic, 3 were diabetic, and 10 were missing HgbA1C lab results. Other parameters show 29 insured and an average age of 46. Our preliminary data indicates a prevalence of high BMI and underdiagnosed conditions, emphasizing a need for early prevention and effective health monitoring. Furthermore, we encourage the clinic to consider expansion of outreach, screening, and education efforts to establish long-term connections with our patients and community.
