About Paper:

Urban soils are becoming increasingly important to study as the practice of urban agriculture is increasing across the country. However, soil ecology in urban areas is vastly understudied due to the majority of the soil being graded for construction.. Urban agriculture has many socio-cultural and environmental benefits for communities, and with the increasing levels of urban agriculture it is important to understand the effects of urbanization on soils that feed people. This study examines physical, chemical, and biological markers of soil health using a chronosequence of three perennial systems in urban areas to understand how these factors change over time with cultivation. Healthy soil provides many ecosystem services and in urban areas may help with heat island effects though supporting plant populations, and community development through thriving urban agriculture spaces. In future work, more research should be done to examine effects on lead levels in urban agriculture perennial systems to gain a better understanding of how to reduce toxicity in soils that people are relying on for food.  Cognitive Map Construction: Three-Dimensional Social Space Claire Leonard
