About Paper:
In recent years, social media use among adolescents has continued to increase rapidly, creating questions about social media's influence on adolescent development, and resulting mental health outcomes. As such, the study aims to investigate the relationship between social media effects on adolescent mental health in the United States. This study uses an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) framework, surveying participants five times a day for up to sixty measurement occasions. This method allows us to take a person-centered approach, therefore allowing us to calculate individual effect sizes for individual adolescents. Previous research in the Netherlands found 10% of adolescent participants were negatively affected by their social media use, while 46% of participants showed positive effects. We hypothesize that adolescents in the United States will show similar proportions of positive and negative social media effects with those in the Netherlands. The findings add important context to ongoing conversations around social media use and adolescent mental health in the United States.
