About Paper:
This project examines how communication in healthcare settings shapes patient understanding of the link between experiences of sexual violence and increased risk of cervical cancer. Although research suggests an indirect relationship through behavioral, psychological, and healthcare access pathways, this connection is rarely communicated clearly, limiting engagement in preventive care such as screening and follow up. The project combines a literature review with an original research component. First, prior research on health communication, cervical cancer prevention, and trauma informed care is analyzed to identify gaps in how risk information is conveyed. Second, a survey assesses baseline knowledge of cervical cancer risk factors, sources of health information, and understanding of screening practices. Participants are then exposed to different health messages that vary in communication style and framing to evaluate which approaches most effectively improve understanding. By comparing how individuals interpret risk across messaging strategies, this study identifies more accessible and patient centered ways to communicate complex health information. This work aims to improve understanding and support informed decision making, contributing to more effective and equitable preventive healthcare.
