About Paper:
Calls for regulation around social media use have increased as a result of conversations around the potentially harmful effects of social media on youth. This study investigates the creation and variation in media policies according to the gender of policymakers. We aimed to understand if gender differences resulted in differing concerns regarding content consumption. We also sought to learn if the gender of policymakers' children played a factor in influencing their belief on which types of regulations should be prioritized. To investigate this we systematically searched for global social media policies and investigated both the creators and the policies themselves. Our expected outcome is that female policymakers, or those with daughter(s), will enforce more policies that regulate media issues that have a stronger effect on girls. In contrast, male policymakers who do not have daughters would focus on policies that have more of an impact on boys. These findings could encourage a further push to meet the need for diversity in our policymakers so that the broad range of issues regarding social media consumption could be tackled instead of certain areas being neglected due to lack of representation.
